Duties and Responsibilities:

To drive any vehicle, excluding HGVs, in order to perform all activities that fall within the Cleansing Service of St Helens Council.

To undertake driver’s daily checks, cleaning and maintenance of vehicles.

To sign in/out vehicle keys, and to ensure that any spare vehicle used is tipped and fuelled each day.

To assist in general refuse collection, street weeping and other duties within the Cleansing Section as required.

To perform all tasks to the required level of production and quality.

To collect any other instructions from the Driver’s board within the Cleansing Section on a daily basis and ensure that they are undertaken.

To update current information to ensure running sheets are amended as necessary.

Taking on-site decisions in non-routine circumstances.

To pass on general communications to colleagues.

Dealing with public enquiries relating to waste collection.

Communicating and being the point of contact on the round with the Cleansing Office.

Ensuring scheduled work is completed each week.

Liaison with supervisors on problem areas.

Liaison with public over parked cars.

Reorganising work schedule as necessary.

Reporting frequent variations from agreed collection points.

To return for bins and empty those that were inaccessible on the scheduled collection day on subsequent days of the current collection week.

To communicate by mobile phone/radio or in written form at the request of Cleansing management.

To radio/telephone the Cleansing Office for further instruction, before the end of duty if the possibility of being unable to collect scheduled days’ work arises.

To assist the Council in terms of the emergency plan or in general emergency situations by carrying out duties commensurate with the grade of the post. This will include removing spillages, traffic collision debris, snow and leaf clearance etc.

To comply with the Council’s Health and Safety Policy and associated safe working procedures and guidelines.

To comply with the Council’s Comprehensive Equality Policy and to ensure that it is implemented within the service area of the post.

To comply with the Council’s Data Protection Policy and Code of Practice within the service area of the post.
