Duties and Responsibilities:

1. To promote flexible and team based working and to work flexibly across the service to ensure that all daily recycling and waste collections and tasks are completed on the scheduled day.
2. To work flexibly as part of the Recycling and Waste team in all areas and on all waste streams, vehicles or crews as directed by a Supervisor as part of group / depot based team working – whereby all teams work together until the daily collections / work tasks have been completed. This means that teams working on recycling collections work together as one team to complete all recycling collection tasks; the same applies to teams working on refuse collection and garden waste collections.
3. To work flexibly, including longer hours as and when required, where vehicle breakdowns, traffic congestion / accidents, delays at waste transfer stations or bank holidays make it necessary to do so in order to complete service delivery on the specified day.
4. To promote a professional image of the council at all times by the maintenance and proper wearing of uniform, protective clothing and ID and to report any missing or damaged items (e.g. torn clothing) to a supervisor before leaving the depot and to the Environmental Team Leader whilst on site. Personal identification must be worn and displayed at all times.

5. To empty and return the full range of recycling and waste containers on the allocated round;
• To safely load and remove wheeled bins used for residual / trade waste, garden waste and recycling materials using bin lift mechanisms.
• To transfer material from all recycling containers into the correct compartments within the vehicle, including separating mixed materials in certain containers.
6. To report deviations from 100% completion of allocated work along with the reason to the Environmental Team Leader as they occur.
7. To inspect recycling containers for contamination and leave non-collection information / cards stating the reason, where appropriate.
8. Where necessary, collect all associated side waste (e.g. at collection points) and recycling that may not be contained within containers.
9. Where necessary, apply non-collection information / stickers as instructed.
10. To report problems preventing or hindering completion of work schedule (e.g. road works, parked vehicles blocking access, frequent variations from agreed collection points, etc.) to the Environmental Team Leader.
11. To assist the Environmental Team Leader safely to reverse using reversing assistant procedures.
12. To collect, empty and return containers from inside alleyways and passages where restricted space exists outside alley gates and collection points.
13. To remove any spillage and leave the area in a clean and tidy state.
14. To communicate with managers, colleagues and members of the public as necessary in accordance with the Council’s standards.
Knowledge

Demonstrate a good practical understanding of recycling and waste collection.

Demonstrate a good knowledge of safe working practices.

Demonstrate a practical knowledge of handling bins and different containers used for public sector recycling and operations

Skills and Abilities

Be able to communicate effectively with work colleagues

Ability to carry out a wide range of practical waste and recycling tasks safely

Ability to communicate sensitively, politely and clearly to members of the public, customers and staff

Ability to interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions

Ability to communicate in writing

Experience

Previous driving experience with a Local Authority or Waste Collection organization

Qualifications
NVQ level 2 in a waste, streetscene or similar operational course

Must have a flexible approach to work, be prepared to undertake additional hours and operate in various teams/activities within the division

Self motivated and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Must be able to work as part of a team

Be willing to do work of a routine nature

Able to work to pre determined deadlines

An ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English
