The IPC Nurse supports the Senior Infection Protection and Control Nurse (SIPCN) with the delivery of a responsive infection prevention and control (IPC) service and is responsible/ accountable, with other members of the Infection Control Team, for investigating, monitoring and raising awareness in the prevention, surveillance, investigation, management and control of healthcare associated infection across care homes and LD care settings.
The post holder is responsible, with the SIPCN, for infection control support; monitoring, investigating and raising awareness of infection control issues and local/national priorities. He/she facilitates the effective implementation and evaluation of control measures to prevent or manage healthcare associated infection building on high-level clinical and leadership experience, skills in teaching, communication, motivation and in building teams.
The post-holder is a source of expert, specialist knowledge on Infection Control issues, and the implementation of practice into care homes and LD care settings.
The post holder is required to have a high level of operational and tactical clinical input within their remit with lesser emphasis on strategy and administration.
The aims and objectives of the IPC Service are to:
Ensure national and local guidance on COVID and other infectious diseases are implemented within children and adult social care settings. As appropriate this may include training care staff on how to screen or test screen residents, service users or staff for Covid-19 or where staff are unable to undertake this within care settings to undertake screening, testing and/or vaccination
Support adult social care services to test and/or vaccinate residents, service users and staff during an outbreak of an infectious disease.
Ensure appropriate PPE is in use in settings
Provide infection control support and guidance to social care services in City and Hackney
Provide a single point of contact for ongoing infection control advice to the care settings and to escalate concerns where necessary, for example, if there are issues with isolating residents who are symptomatic;
Prioritise work with specific care settings upon the advice of the CCG or City and of Hackney Public Health and Quality teams. Priorities for engagement will include size of setting (residents/staff numbers), built environment risks and the vulnerabilities of residents;
Establish a close working relationship with the North East and North Central Health Protection team and work collaboratively to ensure appropriate infection prevention and control in children and adult care settings
In the event that COVID testing is reintroduced, support the monitoring of care home testing by submitting fortnightly reports that details the testing done completeness of testing for asymptomatic and symptomatic residents and staff; and test results (which will require follow-up with setting managers).
Train and support staff to conduct testing, screening and where appropriate vaccinations;
To work to support routine and ad hoc vaccination programmes including flu, shingles etc.
Ensure that issues are identified and raised at a system level through the commissioner. This will require attendance at the City and Hackney C19 Care Home Group, which reports into City and Hackney Strategic Operational Command;
Work with the needs of the system to ‘Make Every Contact Count’.
Support the London Borough of Hackney (LBH) and the City of London Corporation and the City and Hackney CCG in responding to national guidance related to care homes and supported living establishments
